NextNet Captures Two Industry Awards for Delivering NLOS Broadband Wireless Access to Underserved Markets

MVS to Deliver Keynote Address at WCA '03 Tech Symposium Highlighting Success of Mass-Market NLOS Deployment

Minneapolis, MN USA - Jan. 9, 2003 -- NextNet Wireless, the industry's largest supplier of non-line-of-sight (NLOS) broadband wireless access systems, announced today that it has been selected to receive two industry awards from the Wireless Communications Association, for Delivering NLOS Broadband Wireless Access to Underserved Urban and Rural Markets.

NextNet and MMDS service provider MVS Comunicaciones, will each receive awards for providing NLOS high-speed Internet services to business and residential subscribers in underserved urban markets. MVS is currently delivering broadband wireless services, via NextNet's NLOS Expedience™ system, across 250 sq. miles in the center of Mexico City, covering approximately 4 million potential subscribers.

NextNet, and ISP Evertek, Inc. will each receive awards for delivering NLOS broadband wireless services to underserved rural markets. During the past year, Evertek expanded its coverage area to include 6 new Iowa cities, providing over 19,000 potential new subscribers with broadband wireless Internet access, using NextNet's OFDM-based NLOS platform.

"These technical awards carry a unique worldwide distinction in our industry because they are conferred by a jury of the leading carriers and diversified engineering companies," stated WCA President Andrew Kreig. "NextNet's expansion of NLOS commercial deployments in both rural and urban markets, provides inspiration and leadership for the broadband wireless industry, as we move forward in 2003," Kreig concluded.

"We are pleased and honored to be selected to receive our 4th consecutive Wemmie award in three years," stated Barbara Heine, NextNet Director of Marketing Communications. "The NLOS Service to the Underserved Community awards are especially important to NextNet, because they validate service provider confidence and subscriber acceptance of the NextNet solution," Heine concluded.

The "Wemmie" awards will be presented at 8:00 p.m., on January 14, as part of WCA's 9th Annual Technical Symposium and Business Expo being held at the Fairmont Hotel in San Jose, CA. MVS President Ernesto Vargas will kick-off the four-day WCA event with a keynote address on January 13 at 8:30 a.m.

MMDS Internet Service Provider Evertek, Inc. will speak in a separate session of the program entitled, Leveraging Local Funding to Build-Out Rural Broadband Wireless Networks, on January 13 at 3:30 p.m.

Over 1,000 of the world's leading technical, business and government newsmakers in the broadband wireless industry are expected to attend. The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Wireless Week, RCR, and various television and radio media, as well as industry and financial analysts are speaking at and/or covering the conference.

The NextNet Expedience™ NLOS broadband wireless access system is currently deployed in Asia, Africa, the U.S. and Central and Latin America, including the world's largest NLOS deployment in Mexico, the most densely populated city in the world. The Expedience system provides wireless carriers with proven superiority in the critical areas of coverage, capacity and capital cost, allowing for rapid penetration into the untapped business and residential markets. NextNet's flexible OFDM-based platform delivers consistent broadband speeds across NLOS cell radiuses of up to 30 km, using indoor, plug-and-play (self-installable) subscriber units, as well as convenient outdoor (bracket-mount) NLOS subscriber units.
